The Library of Congress has a large selection of materials online in its Digital Collection. These are articles, books, newspapers and photographs that you can download or view on line.
There is a lot of unexpected information there.
Playing with the Historic Newspapers section, I asked for a list of all newspapers published in Flathead County between 1880 and 1950 and got the following list, many of which are available on Microfiche:
