Bersa Talk

Bersa Talk is the main site for forums and information on Bersa pistols. It is a fairly small but informative site with 55000 posts, 5300 topics and 1600 members.

The company was founded in the mid 1950s and is well known among firearm enthusiasts for producing high quality guns at very reasonable prices and it spends very little money on advertisement. Lifetime warranty coverage is provided to the original owners.

While strong and well built, nicely engineered, accurate, visually appealing and very reliable, Bersa handguns are not on par with the most prestigious brands (such as SIG or Beretta for example) when it comes to finishing. However, firearms made by such companies can cost as much as twice or more compared to a Bersa pistol in the same caliber and with similar features. The Argentine company is often influenced by the German firearms manufacturer Walther in the design of its handguns; the Thunder 22, 32 and 380 are basically clones of the famous Walther PP and PPK while the Thunder 9 and 40 are somewhat similar in appearance and some mechanical aspects to the Walther P88. For many products in the past, a similar source of technical "inspiration" was Beretta.

The full size Thunder combat pistol is the standard sidearm of the Argentina Armed Forces (Thunder 9), Argentina Federal Police (Thunder 9), Buenos Aires Provincial Police (Thunder 9) and several other Law Enforcement agencies (Thunder 9 & 40).

The Thunder 22 pistol chambered for the 22 Long Rifle cartridge is widely used among recreational shooters in Latin America and the Thunder 22-6, a longer and thicker barrel version of this handgun, is used in more serious competitions.

Team Bersa, equipped with Thunder 9 and Thunder 40 pistols, has won several IPSC matches. The Thunder 32 and 380 handguns sell very well in countries that ban the use of more powerful cartridges for civilian personal defense purposes. The Thunder 380 is immensely popular in the US market as a small and light, easy concealable, high quality and competitively priced personal defense handgun.

In the United States, Bersa firearms are currently imported by Eagle Imports of Wanamassa, NJ. www.Bersa.com

Ferfal

Ferfal lived through the Argentina convulsions: here is a sample of advice from his Blog. It might be good to bookmark it, as it is one of the two best survival blogs I have found.
----------

There will be Poor... dont be one of them.

Today I came across a very good article by Survival Mom. Her blog is a good example of the new generation of survivalists that prepare for things that happen, not crazy delusions of events that will most likely never take place.

In it I found a link to an article on American Thinker, “An Argentina-like Economic Crisis”. The similarities between the measures taken in Argentina that had such disastrous consequences and the ones taken by the current U.S. administration keep surprising me. Don’t they read? Can’t they see that what they are doing HAS been done before and it didn’t work? I can only assume now that they know well enough that it wont work, they are just doing so to stay in power and make as much money as possible while they still can.
No wonder, Spain is doing the same thing with the expected results. In provinces such as Canarias, unemployment has gone up to 30%. There’s already Argentines that had moved there after the crisis considering moving back, some already doing so, and mentioning the similarities to what they’ve already experiences (people eating out of the trash in restaurants and supermarkets)
As the crisis in USA keeps evolving, its time to get real folks. The household budget has to be reconsidered, the non essentials weighted and objectively reviewed.

You have to understand that what’s happening in USA right now isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. You don’t have significant inflation yet. You don’t have a new generation of poor establishing itself in the society. You’re not suffering the full extent of the consequence of what’s already going on, mostly when it translates into class hatred and fighting which will bring along a wave of crime that includes senseless violence like you’ve never seen before. Something similar to what we saw here a couple week ago after a pregnant women was robbed after taking some money out of the bank. She already gave up the money, what’s the logic behind shooting a defenseless, harmless 9 month pregnant woman in the face when she already gave the robber what he went after? None. None at all, just pure hatred towards those that have a bit more than the rest. (Isidro died a few days ago, by the way, mother Caroline remains in critical condition)
When you have 50% poor and 20% of the population below the poverty line, these things happen. Of the remaining 30%, 25% is a redefined middle class that closely resembles pre-2001 poor. That leaves 5% of the population that has managed to adapt, survive and maintain their old middle class or high class life standards. The disparity is huge, and the political stance is that poor=good, guy with money=bad. There’s always someone that has to take the blame, and its a rare occasion when those that are truly guilty are held responsible for what they’ve done.

Its not a time to panic but a time to sit down for a second and understand where things are going. Its not going to be the end of the world but they are going to be tough times. Very few people will sail through this without being affected.
As for the measures to be taken, you could break them down into three:

1) Ensure the basics to survive a worst case scenario as well as intermediate ones. This means have at the very least a couple months worth of food and two weeks worth of water (a gallon per person per day, minimum) As finances allow, work up that food stockpile (preferably canned, long shelf life food and easy to cook or that requires no cooking) Make sure you have the basic for a survival/emergency kit. This has been discussed in this blog more than enough, just check the “gear” tab on the lower left column.
Among the top of your priorities, make sure you have at the very least one big bore handgun for self defense and the basic training to at the very least handle it safely, the minimums being 9mm for pistol and 38 special/357 magnum for revolver as well as two 50-round boxes of defensive JHP ammunition. Everyone runs to the gunstore when they see the hordes looting, and its usually too late to do you any good. I’ve seen it before, after our economy collapsed in 2001. Its usually too later to wish for a fire extinguisher that you don’t have when you’re in a burning building! Same thing with a gun. Before buying yet another gun, I'd get at least one piece of body armor. Even if its cheaper surplus, when the chips are down wearing armor will do you 1000x  good than an extra gun in the safe. Its only during good, safe times that having 30 firearms and not a single piece of armor makes any sense at all. Often when law abbiding citizens end up shooting someone, they do it against an armed  bad guy. Expect to get some lead yourself for your efforts.
Do lots of research and just buy what you need. If I write 20 posts about knives, 30 about flashlights and 10 about fire starters, its not because you need every single thing I review, its just so that you can make an informed decision when buying one, one that fits you circumstances and budget the best. Be an adult about this and only buy what you need.

2) Redo your budget. Power bill, rent or taxes and other fixed monthly expenses + food+ medical insurance+ gas. Internet may or may not be needed depending on your line of work. These days it usually is. Check your cell phone plan. Are you paying for a phone that isn’t getting much use? Millions get by with pre paid ones, only use texting and only use the actual phone when absolutely needed. Add a small amount for entertainment, the amount will depend on your financial situation of course. To that, ad another 20% that will cover unexpected events (car accidents, fridge that just died ). That’s your monthly budget. Now you start and Excel spreadsheet and write down every expense you make per day, every night after supper. You wont believe how much money doing this will save. The spreadsheet will tell you if you’re doing ok and avoid nasty surprises at the end of the month. Try it for one month, you’ll see how well it works.

3) Make more money. This will be a key factor when inflation hits, and will be mandatory if you want to maintain any glimpse of the life quality standards you want for your family. Some jobs are more time consuming than others but most of the time either one parent (or adult kids) has a few extra hours to work with. Start a home business, something you enjoy and start with bare minimum expenses to begin with. Start taking clients for yourself if your line of work allows it. Give classes, this could be math, music, first aid, shooting, everyone has something he enjoys and is good at. Teaching can be done as little or as much as you want if you find a student that can work around your schedule, its just a matter of finding him. If nothing else, start by cleaning the house and selling all that extra amount of items you just don’t need. People throw away things that could be sold for a few 20 dollar bills every day. I’m 31 and still remember the time when we lived in USA, I must have been 3 years old. We had just moved to the company house and while driving around my father saw a 21 speed bicycle that was layed there with the trash. It only needed a new chain. I still remember the conversation my parents had: “ Are these people crazy? Throwing away something that could be so easily fixed?” My father had a top managing position in an importnat bank, we moved with all expenses taken care of and a nice salary. We sure did not need to pick anyone's trash. It simply didn't compute in his brain to allow sometihng that could be repaired to be thrown in  a garbage truck. Still happens all the time in 1st world countries like US. That’s a line of work on its own right there, you’ll see none of that in Argentina or most South American countries.

Its not the time to go nuts running scared, but it is a time to make a down to Earth evaluation of your personal situation and take action.
Tae care folks.

The Onion: Satirical News Supreme

http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/profile-ak-snc1/object3/1908/81/n20950654496_6098.jpg

If you see it in The Onion, you know it's false.

The Onion's articles comment on current events, both real and imagined. It parodies traditional newspaper features as editorials, man-on-the-street interviews, and stock quotes on a traditional newspaper layout with an AP-style editorial voice. Much of its humor depends on presenting everyday events as newsworthy and by playing on commonly used phrases, as in the headline, "Drugs Win Drug War."

Have friends with strong feeling or extremist views? Want to raise their blood pressure? Send them a link to an Onion story on a topic you know will push their buttons like Obama's Fifth Gulf Coast Visit Really Helps A Lot!

Since 2007, the organization has been publishing satirical news audios and videos online, as the "Onion News Network".

The Onion News Network video series includes items lifted from what are ostensibly ONN news shows and continuing reports:

    * Today Now!: TN is a parody of morning lifestyle and news programs such as NBC's Today show and ABC's Good Morning America. Hosted by Jim Haggerty (in actuality, former New York City TV anchor Brad Holbrook) and Tracy Gill (portrayed by Tracy Toth), the style is typical of the breezy style often found in morning network television shows, with the presenters either uncritical or completely oblivious to the subject matter presented, regardless of the absurdity of the subject (e.g., Haggerty's earnest question about whether or not an omelet recipe requires strictly a metal shoe-horn to measure the butter into the pan)[2].

    * In The Know with Clifford Banes: A parody of Sunday morning pundit shows, ITK is hosted by Clifford Banes, who never actually appears on his own program due to a continuous succession of absurd or improbable circumstances, and is led by a guest host who explains why Mr. Banes cannot attend (e.g., "because he is plummeting toward Earth at ninety-three miles an hour". An Onion-style current political event is examined earnestly by ITK's pundit panel from every angle regardless of how odd it might seem.

    * War For The White House: ONN's continuing coverage of Election '08, opening with a dramatic video apparently depicting Air Force One and a squadron of fighter planes seemingly attacking the White House, mocking the intense, over-the-top style that seems to have become typical in straight news coverage. Notable for its consistent use of military terminology (e.g. "Election Analysis Bunker") and deadpan style.

    * O-SPAN: O-SPAN parodies the thoroughgoing coverage of Congress provided by C-SPAN, including spoof bill-readings on the House floor and spoof committee meetings.

    * ONN-International: A parody of CNN-International, ONNI debuted November 2008. Boasting coverage in 152 languages over 811 countries and with 9 Billion viewers, ONN-International presents news from around the world often with subtitles such as this story from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    * OSN: A reference to ESPN, OSN usually features clips from SportsDome, a parody of ESPN's SportsCenter. The clips usually focus on specific parodies of SportsCenter segments such as the Budweiser Hot Seat, which becomes The Steam Room on OSN. Hosts present in the jocular style synonymous with ESPN and sportscasters on sets that are near-identical knockoffs of the SportsCenter studios.

    * News Room: Is a parody of breaking news segments that appear during commercial breaks or replays on 24-hour news networks. News Room, anchored by Andrea Bennett and Glen Bannon (a name check to Jeff Gannon of Talon News) is set in the fictional cable news network's news room with TV's and switchboards in the background.

    * Raw Justice: A parody of news channels' popular documentaries on attention-grabbing crimes. It looks into ordinary crimes, although the reporter always finds a way to relate a story to the culprit's sexual actions such as "Man had sex with wife thousands of times before killing her".[20]

After a commercial, each item is capped off by a teaser featuring a headline joke. The news reports also have a news crawl filled with joke headlines.

The Onion Radio News is an audio podcast featuring P. S. Mueller as fictional newscaster Doyle Redland.

Paranoia

B) Many people put their guns in gun safes, like I did. That would protect them for the most part. But I think it’s more likely that my own government would take my guns than anyone else - remember Katrina. So I moved my favorite guns out of the house to secure locations. Now all I have available are one shotgun, one rifle, and one handgun, but I could get to the other ones fairly quickly if I really needed to. Someone recently wrote a book and created a web site called HideYourGuns.com. My question is this: What if someone in the government wrote that book? They’d know pretty much where you hid your guns! And they would have a record of every address where one of these books was delivered! Even if that book were written by an individual not associated with the government, anyone could read that book and know the most likely places people hide their guns! This one is a tough call, especially since your gun is registered when you buy it. So they know where you live, and they know the most likely hiding places for your guns!

Searching for Photos? Flickr Hive Mind!

Welcome to Flickr Hive Mind, almost certainly the best search engine for photography on the web.

Flickr Hive Mind is a data mining tool for the Flickr photography database, allowing search by: tags(keywords); Flickr photography groups; Flickr users, their contacts, and favorites; free text; the Flickr Explore algorithm for interestingness.

Flickr Hive Mind can also be an effective tool to identify photography with licenses that allow non-commercial (and sometimes) commercial use. Written by: Nathan Siemers. Inspired by (and thanks to) Flickr Leech. Dedicated to Anna and her Flickritis.

Flickr Hive Mind stores no personal information nor photos, but some general time and IP address information ends up in the apache server logs. For additional details see the privacy policy. Any revenue generated through advertisement on this site is used only to cover the cost of keeping the site online, beyond that Fiveprime donates to charitable organizations (also, there are no ads on User pages). Flickr Hive Mind is currently consuming about 13.6 terabytes of network bandwidth per year (not including the photos themselves)!

(With lack of modesty, I used a photo I had taken to  illustrate this post, a goose at Woodland Park.)

FORMUFIT: Furniture-Grade PVC Fittings

FORMUFIT  was created with one single focus:  Provide all types and sizes of furniture-grade PVC fittings to the end consumer without having to purchase huge quantities, or pay premium prices, like most online fitting stores require.

The fittings have a high glossy finish.  There are no manufacturer stampings, raised lettering or barcodes and all of the ends are flush-tapered and are made to look good in whatever application you put them to use in.  Additionally our fittings withstand the abuse that sunlight applies to most PVC-based plastic products, keep their color and won't yellow or fade.

They come in multiple types, from standard 3-Way Tees to 5-Way Crosses, ideal for complex building, that you cannot find in any hardware store.

You can download their catalog.
