Bytes back!
Byte, the best of the old computer magazines, is coming back, this time on the net.
Authoritative, trusted and deeply technical, BYTE set the bar for tech coverage for decades. And we're proud to announce its return.
Originally launched in 1975, BYTE ushered in the personal computer revolution. It was midwife to the birth of the Mac and the PC. In its pages, readers devoured each delectable detail. No one covered tech like BYTE. Now, we're in the midst of another revolution. We call it the consumerization of IT. If you've ever tried to root a phone or snuck an iPad into work -- or tried to figure out how to handle users like that -- you're part of it. And now you've got a ringside seat.
BYTE couldn't come back at a better time.
BYTE is here to focus on the technology you care most about. The technology you love. News, reviews, how tos and commentary are as authoritative and deeply technical as they ever were, but now offered in a mix of media and include the audience in the conversation via social channels.
BYTE pulls no punches -- digs deep to make sure you know exactly what you need to know to get the most out of your tech, what's worth buying and what to avoid at all cost. Check out what the team of journalists and tech pros has to offer. Sit down and stay awhile
Best of all Jerry Pournelle is back with Byte too!

The virtual machine Shop
The virtual machine Shop (VMS) is a web site dedicated to the perpetuation of machine tool knowledge and training. This project is designed and maintained by volunteers from industry and academia and is free to everyone. Please feel free to learn here. Please feel free to teach here. The VMS is supported by donations (a donation of as little as $2.00 helps keep this site going).
"Is there really a demand for machinists? Yes — even in a recession. One rough calculation found that about a million high-skilled jobs remain unfilled. This is why a fresh approach to job-making, one that focuses on mastery of skills instead of simple button-pushing, matters. "If we go back to the old ways," says sociologist Richard Sennett, who has probably studied the quality of American working life as thoroughly as any other scholar in the past few decades, "we just go back to a very unsustainable path."
